04-22-2008 Warm weather has finally come to the area. Unfortunately, this also means the start of the mosquito season. With higher temperatures and lots of standing water still around, the mosquito eggs are hatching and the larvae are moving through their developmental stages. We may see some adult mosquitoes very soon! At this time, there is very little risk for West Nile Virus(WNV) transmission. The floodwater mosquito, Aedes vexans, is the predominant mosquito in the water right now. While not significant for WNV they can be very annoying. Our crews have been out treating the areas of standing water to kill the mosquito larvae before they become adult mosquitoes. But there's lots of water out there!
