07/29/2010 The WNV is beginning to escalate throughout the Chicago area including our district. We have tested 1398 mosquito pools and have had 22 positive pools. While the percentage of positive pools is still fairly low, it is increasing and with the warm temperatures could do so quickly. It is important to continue protecting yourself from mosquitoes outdoors as well as checking around your residence for holes in window screens or poor-fitting air conditioners that would allow mosquitoes to enter. With the heavy rains last weekend, we expect a significant increase in the nuisance mosquitoes over the next few days. These mosquitoes do not carry WNV but will be very annoying. In addition, we are beginning to do some adult mosquito spraying in the evening hours to try and reduce the mosquito population that may be infected with WNV. Locations where we will be conducting adult mosquito control will be posted on this web site and after hours will be on an answering machine at 708-447-1765. 07/20/2010 We have tested 1075 pools of mosquitoes for the presence of WNV. Only one has been positive for the virus. Other districts in the Chicago area have also been finding positive mosquito pools. While the incidence of the virus is still quite low this season, the virus is beginning to build. Precaution should be taken when outdoors especially at dusk and dawn. The mosquitoes that cause annoyance are still out in numbers but because of the drier weather they are beginning to decrease. 06/28/2010 With the many episodes of heavy rains recently, the numbers of nuisance mosquitoes keeps building and building. Not only do the rains keep sources filled and new eggs hatching, it also prevents us from getting to all the sources in the District to treat them before the adult mosquitoes emerge. Fortunately, the testing for West Nile Virus (WNV) in the mosquitoes has been all negative. While there have been no positive mosquito pools, the virus is still in the area and repellents should be used outdoors especially at dawn and dusk. 05/03/2010 Early season mosquito larvae have been present for several weeks now. Field crews are out treating sites that have mosquito larvae. It has been a fairly dry spring so the sites that are holding water with mosquitoes developing are not large.
